Formed in spring of 2002 by veteran Minneapolis punx, DISRESPECT spent their first year and a half playing covers of the type of music they grew up listening toclassic 80s punk anthems. Their set list included old school favorites from the likes of Abrasive Wheels, The Adicts, Anti-Nowhere League, Blitz, Broken Bones, Crass, Destructors, DI, Discharge, The Expelled, Flux of Pink Indians, GBH, Icons of Filth, Misfits, Partisans, The Ramones, UK Subs, Vice Squad, The Violators, plus a few more modern songs from L7 and Turbo Negro, just to increase the fun. The lineup includes Jonny on guitar, whose other projects include Misery, Hellspawn, Children of Barren Wasteland, and Pisshead Blues Band. On drums is Gary, also of Misery, Hellspawn, Children of Barren Wasteland, and Dreadnaught. On Bass is Darren, from their pre-recordings Misery lineup. The three-prong vocal attack is lead by Dan, whose former bands included Pissed, Destroy and Catalyst A (and is also coeditor and founder of Profane Existence Magazine and Records) and André of Civil Disobedience. The original female vocalist was Athena of Red Vendetta, who quit the band due to other responsibilities after about a year. She was then replaced by relative newcomer Molly, who has given a whole new range to the vocal arsenal. Coinciding with the addition of Molly on vocals, Disrespect started to write their own songs in the same anthemic, sing-along style. In the fall of 2003, they released a basement-recorded demo of six original songs. Over the winter they visited Melvin Ray Studio, the same studio responsible for many classic Profane Existence Records recordings, to rerecord five of the six songs for an EP release. This self-titled EP was released on Profane Existence Records in spring of 2004, with 1000 pressed on red vinyl plus a an additional repress of another 1000 copies on yellow vinyl. Following the success of their debut EP, Disrespect went back to Melvin Ray to record a second EP called titled "Justice in a Bag." This was released in fall of 2004, also on Profane Existence Records, with 666 copies pressed each of red, white, and blue vinyl. In March of 2005 Disrespect played two shows in the Bay Area to coincide with the San Francisco Bay Area Anarchist Bookfair and released a CD of both EP recording sessions (including covers of L7, Abrassive Wheels and Turbo Negro not on the vinyl releases). In spring of 2005 the band revisited Melvin Ray Studio and recorded their third EP entitled "Wartorn." Although the band was not 100% satisfied with this third recording sessions, the record was rushed into production in ordered to be released for the bands' first US tour that summer. The tour took the band through eastern Canada and the US and highlights include a studio session for the famous EqualizingXDistort radio show in Toronto, an appearance at the infamous Pointless Fest in Philadelphia, and a memorable show at CBGBs. A limited edition (200 copies) tour version of the "Wartorn" EP was also released, containign a bonus one-sided EP with the song "We Are the Punx." 2006 started out with big plans for Disrespect and potential plans included a full LP and second US tour. At this point one member started having doubts about being able to continue their participation in the band due to an already heavy burden of responsibilities. In May 2006 it became clear at least one member would not be able to go on and as a group we decided to end the band, rather than seek another replacement member. Thus ended the mostly glorious and sometimes sordid tale of the Minneapolis punk band Disrespect. In Winter 07-08 Disrespect sang their final swan song with "We Are the Punx" being released as part of the "El Libertario" benefit CD. UPDATE (December 9, 2008): All Disrespect songs are now available for free download on the RELEASES page. |
